WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT the Baptism of the Lord

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is a liturgical bridge that connects the Christmas season to Ordinary Time. During the Christmas season we pondered the Incarnation, Nativity, Presentation in the Temple, and Epiphany. Today, we see Jesus manifesting Himself to the world as He began His three years of public ministry.

Jesus begins His ministry through an act of deep solidarity with the fallen human race. John the Baptist had been preaching in the desert and offering a baptism of repentance. John’s baptism was not the same as our baptism today. Instead, it was only a sign of one’s willingness to turn away from sin and turn toward God. Jesus, of course, had nothing to repent of. He was sinless in every way. But that didn’t stop Him from freely choosing to receive the baptism of repentance. Why would He do that?

Simply put, Jesus chose to unite Himself with fallen humanity, taking upon Himself our own sins and suffering their consequences. He humbly allowed Himself to be identified as a sinner in need of repentance. This was done out of love for us and out of His longing to become one with us so that we could become one with Him.

By bowing His sacred head to receive the baptism of repentance, Jesus united Himself and His divinity to everyone who had already chosen to repent. And He gave power to every forthcoming act of repentance others would make, even until today. When we repent today, we meet Jesus in that same water of repentance.

Jesus’ baptism teaches us that God is with us and in solidarity with us. God does not flee from the world’s pain but comes to be with us. And in a world where so many people feel erased or cast aside, Jesus’ baptism declares that everyone is important.

QUÉ SABER SOBRE la Bautismo del Señor

La Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor es un puente litúrgico que conecta la temporada navideña con el tiempo ordinario. Durante la temporada navideña reflexionamos sobre la Encarnación, la Natividad, la Presentación en el Templo y la Epifanía. Hoy vemos a Jesús manifestándose al mundo mientras comenzó sus tres años de ministerio público.

Jesús comienza su ministerio a través de un acto de profunda solidaridad con la raza humana caída. Juan el Bautista había estado predicando en el desierto y ofreciendo un bautismo de arrepentimiento. El bautismo de John no fue igual que el nuestro de hoy. En cambio, solo era una señal de la disposición de uno a alejarse del pecado y volverse hacia Dios. Jesús, por supuesto, no tenía nada de lo que arrepentirse. Era sin pecado en todos los sentidos. Pero eso no le impidió elegir libremente recibir el bautismo del arrepentimiento. ¿Por qué haría eso?

En pocas palabras, Jesús eligió unirse con la humanidad caída, asumiendo nuestros propios pecados y sufriendo sus consecuencias. Humildemente permitió ser identificado como un pecador necesitado de arrepentimiento. Esto se hizo por amor hacia nosotros y por Su anhelo de unirse a nosotros para que pudiéramos hacerlo uno con Él.

Al inclinar su cabeza sagrada para recibir el bautismo del arrepentimiento, Jesús se unió a sí mismo y a su divinidad a todos los que ya habían elegido arrepentirse. Y dio poder a cada acto de arrepentimiento que otros cometieran, incluso hoy. Cuando hoy nos arrepentimos, nos encontramos con Jesús en esa misma agua de arrepentimiento.

El bautismo de Jesús nos enseña que Dios está con nosotros y en solidaridad con nosotros. Dios no huye del dolor del mundo, sino que viene a estar con nosotros. Y en un mundo donde tanta gente se siente borrada o descartada, el bautismo de Jesús declara que todos son importantes.

The bishops' pastoral on stewardship reminds us that "... there is a fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of baptism that people place their gifts, their resources - their selves - at God's service in and through the Church."
